Managerial Transformation Through Personal Growth

By: Wendy Nickerson, Psy.D

Bill Marriott, Jr., the chairman of Marriott said, "We know that if we treat our employees correctly, they'll treat the customers right. And if the customers are treated right, they'll come back." The personal development of managers play an important role in this process. We live in a world of laws of human nature. The greater a manager's understanding and alignment with these universal principles, the greater his managerial effectiveness. Consequently, a natural byproduct of a self-evolved manager is good customer relations.

A personally developed manager is someone who has expanded his comfort zone over and over again, and constantly challenges his own beliefs. This never-ending process produces the fruits of a mature human being with depth of character and an amazing increase in self-awareness, compassion, respect for others, perceptive and intuitive capabilities, and a desire to examine and understand his beliefs and his emotional states. These managers possess much more self-awareness into their own thoughts and behaviors and as a result tend to react less and nurture more. You can distinguish him because you will feel an excitement for life and work when you are around him. Employees transfer this passion into their own responsibilities.

Sometimes the barriers contrived in our minds produce impenetrable personal limitations. Growth is possible when self-imposed limitations are destroyed. However, all growth is a leap in the dark. An act without the benefit of experience. It demands a temporary surrender of security, or perceived security. How do we begin to change? Avoid self- limiting attitudes. Expose yourself to new learning situations. Get to know the people around you a little better. Risk failure. Encourage your growth potential and soak up nature's nourishment. You never learn how to grow. You can only learn how to learn how to grow.
